Report: Training Camp Day 3

Day three of Redskins Training Camp was almost over before it began, with thunderstorms and lightning seeing fans evacuated from the Bon Secours facility following the morning walkthrough session. Thankfully, the weather abated and the Redskins hit the practice field wearing their pads for the first time this year.

Here are our key observations from day three:

  • It was clear that Quarterback Kirk Cousins was working on his deep ball today, often sending his Wide Receivers on deep go-routes during drills. For Cousins, the deep ball is an area of his game where he’s still striving for consistency. In the afternoon practice, he threw 8 different deep balls, completing three to Rashad Ross, Chris Thompson and DeSean Jackson. The other 5 passes all fell incomplete, and the common theme for Cousins was getting the right distance on his balls; slight underthrows appear to be his most common issue in this regard.
  • The play of the day was the aforementioned deep completion to DeSean Jackson, and it was the best throw Cousins has made in Training Camp so far. Jackson was matched up one-on-one with Josh Norman, and Cousins launched the ball deep. While the ball was in the air, it appeared to have been overthrown by a good 10 yards, and Norman found himself quickly losing a foot-race to the electrifying Jackson, who hit the next gear and somehow got his hands to the ball, bringing it down in the endzone for what would have been a 40 to 45 yard touchdown.
  • Even though the offense hit a few big plays today, for the most part it was once again the defense having the most success. Bashaud Breeland picked off Cousins in a true jump-ball situation against Rashad Ross, making an impressive play on the ball at the highest point and bringing it down securely. Before the DeSean Jackson long touchdown, the Breeland pick was probably the play of the day.
  • Cousins was picked off a second time later in the day during 11-on-11 drills by Trent Murphy, who was playing with the first unit due to the absence of Preston Smith (he attended a funeral yesterday and is travelling back to Richmond). Murphy correctly read the play as a WR bubble screen intended for Pierre Garcon, jumped the route from the line of scrimmage, and picked off the pas for what would have been a pick-six in a live game situation.
  • The players along the defensive line had plenty of opportunities throughout the day, and both Ricky Jean-Francois and Stephen Paea are looking impressive upfront. They’re splitting time with Kendall Reyes as Defensive Coordinator Joe Barry rotates players through the defensive front.
  • During special teams drills, Chris Thompson appeared to be the best looking option in both kick and punt return duties. However it was Bashaud Breeland’s presence working as a returner that caught the eye of many. If the order in which the players were lining up for returns is any indication of the depth chart, Breeland is the 4th string returner behind Thompson, Ross and Crowder.
  • Rookie Running Back Keith Marshall showed why he’s such a dangerous weapon in a few different drills today, making multiple defenders miss with explosive agility and elusiveness in the open field. During 11-on-11s, Marshall mostly ran with the second unit and had a few nice runs, but also got stuffed on a couple of carries as well. It’s difficult to judge the second unit run game though, as it seems that the second unit defensive line is significantly better than the second unit offensive line.
  • Another rookie is also catching peoples eyes, as third round Cornerback Kendall Fuller continues to make plays. Today he rushed the Quarterback on a delayed blitz from the nickel, and got his hands on Cousins’ yellow jersey, effectively “sacking” the Quarterback in a drill that doesn’t allow live tackling – especially of the Quarterback.
  • Without jinxing it, the Redskins have gotten through their first portion of Training Camp without any players suffering injuries so far. Tomorrow (Sunday 31 July) is the first scheduled off-day for the players, and Coach Gruden explained what he expects of his players as they are away from camp;

“An off day is about rest for them. They’ve got to get back in the book and review what we’ve done the last couple days, make sure they’re up to speed and maybe look ahead at what’s coming in next. But the main thing is to get their bodies, get the treatment necessary, maybe get a lift in. Coach [Mike] Clark will have them get a workout in possibly, but the main thing is rest.”
